There are a few approaches to choosing a place to drop your gift, each with benefits, and each with risks.
You could leave it out in the open where it can be seen by everyone who passes it. Sitting on a park bench, on the edge of a sidewalk or pedestrian bridge, nestled in the grass or garden area of a popular park. Be creative and have fun! It would be best to avoid leaving your gift where it's likely to be in the way. You want someone to find it, not trip over it. Also, always keep in mind that this is meant to be an anonymous surprise. Dropping a gift in a high-traffic area is best done at night or early morning when there aren't too many witnesses.
There's also the subtle approach. Choose a high traffic area, but make the gift somewhat hidden so only the more observant passersby will notice it. Or you could opt for a spot more out in the open in a low traffic area. Treat it like an Easter egg hunt. You want someone to find it, but you don't want to make it super easy either. Be mindful of the weather, try not to leave your gift someplace where it may not be found for a week or more if there is precipitation or extreme temperatures in the forecast.
No matter how you decide to to choose a drop site, remember that you want your gift to be found, you want it to go home with someone. Keeping your gift safe from the elements and keeping your potential gift-finders safe when they go to collect the gift are very important.
